Wife and I bought the Asus Eee PC 1001P-MY17-BK primarily to use as an on-the-road word processor and internet connection for when we do customer service evaluations at various businesses. We bought it in April 2010 and it is now August. It has worked very well for this purpose. It’s size is excellent for slipping into brief cases and overnight bags, and it has generally been easy to connect when network service has been available.
I chose this one primarily because at the time it was at the low end of the price range, had at least a four-star Amazon rating from a large number of people, it had a fairly large hard drive, and had the longest advertised battery life. I didn’t really think it would get 11 hours on a charge (and it hasn’t) but it does last for several hours, especially if work is done in short segments. One might get close to 9 or 10 hours if it is left on with no processing being done, but if there is steady word processing, the remaining battery life decreases. If one plays any videos or music, the remaining battery life spins down quite quickly.
As far as usability, it has worked quite well. Screen is easy to read, Windows 7 starter is adequate for what we do, and we have succesfully added the software we needed without difficulty (primarily Windows Office and Dropbox). My wife (who is the primary user) finds the 92% keyboard and scratch pad quite workable. I find it OK for internet cruising, but difficult to use for extended typing. Altho my hands are not all that large, I seem to hit unintended keys, and it seems easy for my thumbs to contact the scratch pad, which sends the cursor flying across the screen. More than a couple times I have erased entire just-typed paragraphs because my thumb apparently dragged (thus selecting a large amount of text) and the next entered letter wiped everything out. This is frustrating for me, but as I said, my wife says it works OK for her.
We treat if fairly gingerly, because it does not seem to be ruggedly constructed. The flat surfaces and the keyboard bend under light finger pressure. Nothing has given way, but we are careful not to put it to the test.
Prior to buying it I read some reviews citing the wall adaptor power supplies as a problem area. When I first got it, I did attempt to simultaneously use the machine while it was charging. The adaptor became very hot, and the machine appeared to stop charging. I shut it down, let everything cool, and tried again from a different outlet. Same thing. Since then we have not tried to use the machine while plugged into the wall — we let it charge up, then unplug it and use it. Then shut down and recharge. The power adaptor has stayed reasonably cool and has continued working.
One other quirk. We have a digital voice recorder with a USB plug built into it. When I plugged it into the notebook, it immediately powered the machine off, and I mean instantly. Took it out, powered up, tried again. Same thing. I realize now I have not tried any other USB items on it, so I don’t know if it was the recorder or the notebook (or maybe those two just do not work together).
Overall we are pretty satisfied with it, and it was a worthwhile buy for us.

This is a great computer to take to a hotel…. It is not meant for solid home use; the keyboard is too small, and the memory isn’t great.
You can actually use the keyboard, but I do find myself pecking with one finger a lot, which is why I didn’t give it a five star. The speed is pretty fair, and the wireless connection is awesome. I can get a signal in a room that I could not get on my wireless laptop, which makes it a nice little computer to use in my bedroom if my husband is on our main computer. I previously had no way of connecting to the internet in that room, but thanks to this computer and our wireless system, I can.
It was easy to set up (almost no set up required), easy to figure out, for this novice, and easy to connect to the internet. The Linux, which the salesman warned me about, and my teenager told me I would hate, was not an issue at all. It doesn’t take any prevous knowledge of how to use linux. It was easy to connect to the internet at the hotel and at home.
It serves my purpose perfectly (throw in a back pack to take on vacation to connect to the internet). I haven’t really done anything with documents. It doesn’t have a lot of memory or a place to put a dvd…, but you can use a card… for memory and add an external disk drive. I wouldn’t want to type a whole lot on it. It is best for net surfing, checking e-mail…, but like I said, you can use the keyboard. It just takes a little more effort than a full size.
I bought a little mouse to go with it, and it is handy dandy! I also like the little neoprene or whatever it is called cover (quite awesome). It is great protection for it. I put the mouse and cord in a little make up bag and throw in my back pack with it.

I did a lot of research and waited a long time before buying this Netbook; I totally love the gorgeous look and finish, the ports are hidden under covers. Reasons I selected this model: the New Intel Atom N450, 2GB of memory (vs. 1 GB factory installed for most Netbooks), Win7 Home Prem. (vs. Starter Ed for other Netbooks), Wireless N, Bluetooth (I use a BT Wireless mouse), 1.3 MP webcam… Etc. Overall it is a very well equipped, very light and portable Netbook.
The screen is sharp and easy to read even outside (not under direct sun light).
The keyboard is really comfortable and easy to use.
Absolutely love the Express Gate, it is a stand-alone operating system from ASUS that boots up in seconds and provides the essential appz such as File Explorer, internet browser, photo viewer… in seconds I am connected to the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot and good to go.
The Cons are:
1) The most important thing for the Netbook is the battery life; on this one… it sucks! Better explain in numbers, Watching a movie from the Hard Drive with Bluetooth and Wireless both OFF and battery set on power saver: ~3 Hrs, Streaming video online with Wireless ON & BT OFF and battery set on balanced: ~2.5 Hrs, normal internet surfing (No Stream) with Wireless ON & BT OFF and battery set on power saver: ~4 Hrs, Video chat with Wireless ON & BT ON and battery set on balanced: ~2 Hrs, playing light games (like Luxor 3) full screen with BT and Wireless both OFF and battery set on power saver: ~2 Hrs. I haven’t yet tried to run it on High Performance battery setting for a long time!! The battery never lasted for 4.5 Hrs or more no matter what I turn off and on which settings the battery is; the 6 Hrs battery life is inaccurately advertised!
2) Surprisingly it is not very responsive, I was expecting way better than that! I understand that it is designed for web surfing and light applications and this is exactly what I’m using it for, if I stream a video on YouTube and I have 3 more tabs open in IE for email, news, blogs… the video breaks up really bad! Close a couple of tabs and it works fine! I mean for a 1.66 GHz dual core CPU and 2 Gigs of RAM you think it can do better. Now the performance significantly improve when it’s connected to AC power and set the battery to high performance but the Netbook should be a portable device, if I have to stay plugged to AC power, I would rather prefer to use my 17″ laptop!
3) The 1024×600 resolution is not compatible with a lot of websites and applications, seriously… the manufactures has to get out of this box, 1280×720 is totally doable in this screen size!
I would still recommend this Netbook but purchasing an additional battery is a must, which by the way I wasn’t able to get an extra battery, I’ve been looking since the day I placed the order till the time I’m writing this review, I have searched the internet without luck and contacted ASUS several times regarding this and they keep telling me that it will be available in Amazon and some other websites in the near future… I’m still waiting.

This was my first netbook purchase and I did a fair amount of research before decided which one to buy. This seemed to have good reviews across the board and I’ve used Asus products in my desktops before. I’m a full-time student so price was an issue also, Amazon had the best deal at the time along with free shipping. Here’s my experience so far:
The good:
I love this netbook. It’s not only attractive and very portable, I didn’t have much trouble going from a full size keyboard to the slightly smaller one and the screen was clear and sharp. For the hardware it has, it’s relatively fast and reliable. I’m mostly using it to do schoolwork (Microsoft Office Suite), internet research etc. and it’s perfect for those activities. I haven’t tried any graphics heavy games on it yet but I do watch high def videos on it full-screen with no problem. I did upgrade to the 2 GB ram and I’m glad I did. Battery performance has been great and the components (power cords etc.) have functioned perfectly. It came with Windows 7*. If you’re not ready to invest in a laptop this is a good baby step away from your desktop pc.
The bad:
This isn’t really a bad comment about Asus as much as it is Microsoft; Windows 7 Starter has a bunch of goofy, irritating limitations. Fortunately they took the 3 applications running at a time limit away but you can’t even change the background on your start-up screen. I’ve only had it about a week and I doubt I’ve found all the limitations (Microsoft Outlook isn’t installed?). Other than Windows, you’ll probably want to delete most of the preinstalled software since it’s not really useful and unnecessary. Although the shiny finish is pretty, it fingerprints horribly. The sleeve they include is really just a glorified sock so get yourself a good hardcase. Sound is kinda tinny from the speakers but that’s to be expected.
Other thoughts:
Great idea for someone on a budget that isn’t looking for a super-high performance machine. You can upgrade to the full version of Windows 7 (about an extra 60-70 bucks) but I’m not sure I’d spend my money on that. If you have kids they’ll probably want to steal it from you.
