ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Seashell 10.1-Inch Pearl Black Netbook – 6 Hour Battery Life Review


NOTE: This is not a complete review, just some information on my recent experience with warranty service.
I quickly got an RMA number via email from ASUS after reinstalling Windows failed to restore my netbook. The repaired computer was returned to me with a new hard drive within a week. I live in CA, and I sent it to a CA service center, so your results may vary if you live elsewhere.
I and others who bought this computer experienced WiFi connection problems that a BIOS update didn’t fix,nor were there any other updates on the ASUS site to address this problem. After I booted up my “new” computer for the first time, it detected my home network (draft-N) and quickly connected. Out of the box last year the only WiFi that it would connect to was G.
I’m pleased with my first experience with ASUS warranty service.
A final comment on aesthetics. The Pearl black finish looks good unless you touch it. I saw a newer version of black last week, sort of a matte finish graphite, and it doesn’t show fingerprints, unless of course you’re eating pizza at the same time as you’re typing.

I purchased this for the battery life that is supposed to last eleven (11) hours and for the white color and have had the item for over a month now and have been closely watching the battery life. In the real world useI get about seven hours of battery life. By real world use I am surfing the web, checking email, watching news video broadcasts and perhaps using the netbook to read a novel. I am somewhat disappointed in the battery life hence the four star rating.

With regard to my choice of white, I am delighted in the color because it hides fingerprints, smudges that just come with use of the machine. I find that I only have to wipe off the body of the netbook about once a week and it always looks respectable. With regard to screen resolution — you just don’t have much choice and it does well for my general use and allows one to read web pages without having to scroll from side to side. The screen can be viewed not only from sitting directly in front of the screen but from the sides as well.

The speakers are a surprise for the size of them. One does not expect much in the way of sound from a netbook but this little gem puts out a lot of volume and you can easily watch a movie on the screen and would not have to wear headphones to hear it and I am hard of hearing my folks. The sound quality from the speakers is adequate and as I already mentioned the volume they provide is a bonus.

I have not found the need to update the amount of ram and am running the provided Windows 7 Starter which is a joke as it is such a pared down operating system that Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves. Thankfully, with a little searching on the internet, one can find a work around for the lack of ability to change the desktop, theme, etc.

The keyboard is cramped but workable if one can learn to be VERY careful when using the right shift key.

I purchased this item knowing about the faults thanks to the views at Amazon.com and the only major disappointment is the battery life. I have not needed to call for warranty service and can not speak with regard to the type of service one can expect.

I purchased this netbook about a week ago and am loving it. I must say that in reading this review you should keep in mind this is my first netbook. Although I have always been a computer person, I have never used a netbook before so I cannot review it as it compares to like items.

This was purchased to do the “light” daily stuff like web surfing and simple word processing in place of a 14″ HP laptop. The size and weight difference is great. I can hold my sleeping newborn in one hand and carry this thing around in the other with ease.

The 92% keyboard is easier to adjust to than I anticipated. The touchpad (my first experience with an Asus) is very responsive. Wish it had a scroll bar like my HP but the Asus method of swiping 2 fingers to scroll gets the job done well enough. On the same note the way Asus allows you to zoom in and out on web pages and pdfs by using the touchpad (iphone-style) is handy.

To date I have not had any real performance issues with 1GB of ram but I plan on updating to 2GB just to help free up some memory that is sucked up by background apps like AVG etc.

Battery life is tremendous.

Built-in webcam and mic works fine with Skype.

There is no active cooling (no fan) which keeps it quiet.

Windows 7 Starter is a little bleh. Though you can change the wallpaper with a free download from Asus, the customization options with Starter are limited.

The only thing I am not crazy about is the display–it is not bad, just not great. The picture is not particularly vivid. I know some higher-end netbooks are offering better resolutions now, but I don’t think it warrants the extra cost.

Oh, and like all computers these days the time it took to uninstall all the garbage that comes preloaded is ridiculous. Par for the course I guess.

All in all I am pleased with this purchase. The price seems reasonable and, frankly, my wife is happy so I am too. I would just keep in mind that you are purchasing a netbook, not a laptop, so don’t be surprised by the performance limitations.

UPDATE:
Installed a 2gb stick of ram from Crucial last night with no problems. Per someone else’s post, I disabled BootBooster in the Bios, started the OS, powered off, installed the RAM, started the OS, restarted and turned BootBoost back on, and started the OS. No problems.

This is a wonderful netbook. I bought this cause I needed to do work when I am stuck at school and didn’t want to drive back home waste gas. It does everything I need it to: surf the web, write documents, email, and it’s portable. I use this laptop as a means to do work at school since I didn’t want to buy a regular laptop. I already have a desktop at home, so I use this netbook as a means of doing SMALL AMOUNTS of works while at school.

Because it’s a netbook I know not to expect it to work like a Macbook or any other fast-pace, high-capacity laptop. It’s not meant for that type of functionality.

Bottom line: This is an awesome laptop if you are looking for something to do your work at a coffee shop like read and write documents and emailing.

It is not for those of you who tend to have more than 3+ programs running. Here’s a quick analogy: netbooks are like little kids, if you ask them to carry an item for you they will only probably carry one or two items no more than 5 pounds. Regular laptops are adults who can carry about 5+ items about 50 pounds (depending on the adult) and not have a problem.

The processor (Intel Atom) on this netbook will not match up to regular processors like Core 2 Duos.

Do not buy this laptop if it’s going to be your ONLY laptop. Buy it for convenience and portability.

I have been using this netbook for over a week now, next to my laptop.

I am more than happy with this product, can highly recommend it.

I had been looking for something small and lightweight with a good and speedy performance. No heavy apps need to be run, basically just want to get on the net, use a real keyboard, use Skype and watch a movie or two.

Yes, the cover does attach fingerprints, I don’t find this so important.

More important is performance and this is just great.

I have yet to change to the 2GB RAM, so this review is based on the 1GB RAM performance.

Startup is quick and easy, Starter Windows 7 is preinstalled. Make sure you install all the updates, this takes quite a while.

When I wanted to use Skype, I got a warning that the performance might not be enough to power a Skype call, however the call quality was fine. The warning could disappear once I upgrade to 2 RAM.

I am not entirely sure about the proclaimed 14 hrs of performance, as it says in the manual that the battery will reach its’ full performance level after several charges/discharges, and the ‘remaining time’ indicator changes depending on how many applications are running simultanously at any given time, but what I CAN say is that it runs a very long time, easily 8-10 hrs.

I find the keyboard user-friendly, only a few typos – really on a keyboard that size it could be a lot worse and I type fast. Very nice and more than I expected.

The touchpad is easy to use, no problems with that.

Sound quality also acceptable for such a little machine, also video is just fine.

Performance is quick, also no problem with that.

The only – but really the only – minus that I would give is that the keyboard is quite loud. But other than that – no probs.

Bearing in mind that a netbook cannot be compared with a full notebook, this little machine does just great and I am happy with my purchase.

The key factors for me were:

Performance: this is one of the few machines in its’ category that can be upgraded to 2GB RAM
Weight: at 3 lbs really light
Size: want to fit it into my purse. Works great.
Battery time: a proclaimed 14 hrs – yet to be verified – but definitely enough juice to last a transatlantic flight.

I recommend this netbook to anyone who wants a small, light machine with good performance with a long battery life.

This is my third Asus notebook/netbook that I am purchasing. As has always been the case, Asus makes a quality product that stands up to some light abuse. The overall finish of this particular netbook is outstanding. No glossy spots (not even the screen) to grab fingerprints, a nice flat track pad, unlike the dimpled ones they’ve been using the past year or so, And a good specification list, make this a great buy.

My only complaint is Windows 7 Starter edition. I have been using Windows 7 for over a year now and have learned to love all of the great things that Windows 7 offers in comparison to previous windows versions, but the starter edition is TERRIBLE. You cannot change your desktop background, you get no aero peek, or any aero glass features. And overall, Windows 7 is slow slow slow to boot on this netbook. I have plans to reformat it with Windows XP like my other Asus netbook, which boots quickly and runs great.

Overall, I was very pleased with my third computer from Asus.
